Common Types of Eyelid Spots and Growths
Eyelid bumps and growths may present with a number of conditions, ranging from inflammation to malignant tumors. The most common types of eyelid bumps include:
- Styes – When bacteria get into the eyelid’s oil glands, a round, red bump may appear. Symptoms of styes include soreness, sensitivity to light and watering eyes.
- Chalazion – An inflammatory lesion, chalazion presents when oil-producing glands or tear glands become blocked. Depending on where it grows and its size, this benign cyst can block or blur vision.
- Xanthelasma – Tending to appear in older adults, xanthelasma is a condition in which fatty growths occur. While harmless, these yellow bumps are often removed to improve eyelid appearance.
- Eyelid Cancer – Red, brown or black nodular growths on the eyelid may indicate an eyelid tumor. Malignant eyelid tumors usually require surgery, including removal of the tumor and eyelid reconstruction.
While not all eyelid bumps, spots and growths are harmful, they should be examined by a medical professional to rule out serious and potentially life-threatening conditions.
