Correction of Eyelid Retraction Caused by Thyroid Eye Disease

Thyroid eye disease (TED) – also known as Graves’ orbitopathy (GO), is an autoimmune condition that can cause inflammation of the eye and surrounding tissues. Symptoms of TED include swelling, dry eyes and retraction, or tightening, of the eyelids. At Eye Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeons of Central New York, our oculoplastic surgeons have a wealth of experience correcting eyelid retraction caused by thyroid eye disease. What Is Thyroid Eye Disease?

A butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck, the thyroid produces and secretes thyroid hormones, which maintain the speed of the metabolism. However, diseases of the thyroid can cause the gland to malfunction, either producing too much hormone (hyperthyroidism) or too little (hypothyroidism).

One of the most common causes of hyperthyroidism is Graves’ disease, an autoimmune disorder that results in the overproduction of thyroid hormones. In some cases of Graves’ disease, TED presents, resulting in the following signs and symptoms:

  • Bulging eyes
  • Pressure or pain in the eyes
  • Puffy or retracted eyelids
  • Light sensitivity
  • Vision loss

Signs and symptoms of TED can appear at the same time as hyperthyroidism or several months later, and it disproportionately affects women ages 40 years and older. Smokers are at a higher risk for TED, and even those with euthyroid, or a normally functioning thyroid, can develop the disease.

What to Expect from Eyelid Surgery

Because untreated TED can result in damage to the cornea and optic nerve, it’s important to consult with your doctor if you believe that the condition could be affecting your vision. At Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeons of Central New York, we take both nonsurgical and surgical approaches to treating eyelid retraction. Nonsurgical methods include botulinum toxin and filler injections, which can help the muscles that control the eyelid to relax. The muscles can also be surgically altered to relieve tension in the eyelids to lower them from their retracted position.
