Entropion

A condition in which the eyelid rotates inward, entropion can cause eyelashes to rub against the eye, causing redness, irritation and abrasions on the cornea. In most cases, entropion presents slowly as a result of aging, surgery, trachoma and other conditions. As it progresses, the continuous abrasion can cause eye infections and lead to loss of vision in the affected eye. Most instances of entropion require surgery to tighten the muscles around the eyelids.

Ectropion

When the lower eyelid turns or sags outward, exposing the surface of the inner eyelid, it’s referred to as ectropion. The most common cause of this condition is muscle relaxation due to aging, but it may also be the result of facial paralysis and injury. Ectropion causes symptoms, such as eye dryness, excessive tearing, irritation, burning, redness and chronic conjunctivitis. When ectropion occurs, surgery is usually necessary to repair the out-turning eyelid.
